Local Authority Common Ask
Enabling your data to be shared only once, in the same format, to electricity and gas distribution networks serving your area to inform network investment planning.
The Local Authority Common Ask
We know that planning the future energy system can be complex for local authorities. In the past, councils often had to share the same forecasts, including Local Area Energy Plans (LAEPs), separately with different electricity and gas network operators to help inform investment and planning decisions.
To make this easier, UK Power Networks DSO worked with other energy network companies to create a more joined-up approach.
In 2025, UK Power Networks DSO, Cadent and SGN launched the first Local Authority Common Ask. This standardised template allows local authorities to share their future energy forecasts with multiple network operators at the same time, reducing duplication and saving time.
Building on this success, the initiative expanded in 2026 to include electricity network operators NGED, SSEN and SP Energy Networks. Together, we're helping create a more consistent and coordinated approach to energy planning, making it easier for local authorities to shape the energy system of the future.

By reducing administration and simplifying data sharing, the Local Authority Common Ask gives councils more time to focus on delivering their local energy ambitions. A single, standardised approach makes it easier to share forecasts, support planning decisions and ensure energy networks are ready for future demand.
Developed jointly by network operators, local authorities and delivery partners ERM and Regen, the initiative is helping create a more joined-up approach to energy planning. Interest from organisations across Great Britain shows the potential to scale this approach nationally, making planning easier for local authorities and improving outcomes for communities.
Who are Cadent and SGN?
Cadent and SGN are both Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs), supplying gas to 16.9 million homes between them across the UK. They manage and maintain the pipes that keep the gas flowing to our homes and businesses.
Who are NGED, SSEN and SP ENW?
National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and SP Electricity North West (SP ENW) are both Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), like UK Power Networks, distributing electricity to homes and businesses. To locate your local electricity distribution operators please visit Energy Networks Association page on: Who is my DNO.
